Jean Grady’s passion for painting began at an early age and was inspired by a blend of workshops and university courses. She began painting with watercolours, but shifted to acrylics for the freedom to create on a larger scale and to work quickly, maintaining a fresh semi-abstract style.

These pieces are an ode to my mennonite heritage, my grandmother and my great aunt. They have always been strong female figures in my life and showed me int heir own way how culture can endure without carrying on patriarchal practices that smothered and depreciated women. This piece is about communities relationships with RCMP and police. There is a very deep wound there, one deepened over years of abuse of power and lack of understanding between two worlds. Individuals in communities can cause deep harm, but communities can be capable of protecting themselves. Limited edition print, 50 editions. This piece is an ode to my childhood self. A time when I imagined myself as a little river person, half-fish half-girl. I’d walk down to the river by my home in the evenings and sit on the banks of the river and imagine myself swimming below the murky waters. Reimagining myself as part of the river and part of the creatures that lived in it. Limited edition print, 25 editions. This piece questions nationalism and the value of obeying without thinking the orders of an authority figure. The decoration on the surface is bold in shapes and colours, characteristic of national flags, but no specific countries are meant to be represented. This piece is part of a small collection dedicated to my years spent leading a group of incredible women in conservation efforts, to protect lakes. Wrapped around the smiling woman is a northern pike, a lake fish. The women I staffed were one of a kind, astounding individuals. They were a constant source of inspiration and admiration. Oil is the foundation of many of the products we consume, either directly or indirectly, and has too often been the catalyst of war. This piece, the figure of a baby blissfully eating oil while donning army camouflage, questions what the effect will be on our future if we continue the mass consumption of products based on the oil economy.
